Energy Boosters
During this sometimes grey and drab time of the year, we need a little something to keep us energized until spring rolls around. A poor diet comprised of too much salt and fat can lower your energy level, while eating a regimen full of protein and carbohydrates can revive you! Here are seven foods that will get you going.
Lean red meat
Animal meat is rich in protein and iron, and is part of a well-balanced diet. However, it should be consumed in moderation; twice a week will suffice. Iron, which is also found in abundance in meat, can maintain one's energy level, particularly among women—we tend to lack it due to our periods.
Eggs
Eggs are imperative for those looking to increase their energy level, as well as for people who live a very active lifestyle. Eggs contain 6 grams of protein and 14 nutritional elements. One egg for breakfast, two or three times a week, can ensure you stay aware and energized all day.
Fish
Rich in protein, and vitamins, fish is a very energizing food. It is a healthier choice than meat, and contains a smaller amount of calories. Sardines, for example, are very tiny, but pack more protein than a rib steak! Also give mackerel a try, as it is rich in omega-3 fatty acids, as well.
Whole wheat pasta, brown rice, and whole grain cereals
These three foods contain high amounts of carbohydrates that are important in maintaining a high energy level. It is the complex carbohydrates that burn off rather slowly, which are more beneficial than those that are burned more quickly (like artificial sugars or white flour-based pastas), as they send a constant flow of energy to the brain. They provide for a long-lasting boost, and are easy to digest.
Water
Water is a life source, as well as one of energy! It is proven that you get more tired as you dehydrate, so why not replace that afternoon coffee with a tall glass of water? It'll definitely perk you up, so try to drink six glasses per day—even if you're not thirsty!
Unsweetened dried fruit
They are a veritable source of energy, as they are high in natural sugar; a handful can definitely invigorate you. They're also rich in minerals and are highly recommended for lengthy activities—they'll keep you going for longer. It is wise to eat in moderation, however, since their high sugar content implies they are high in calories. In that instance, fresh fruits would probably make for a better alternative.
Vitamin C
Who hasn‘t had an energy boost after downing a glass of orange juice in the morning? Vitamin C can also be found in broccoli and kiwis, so give this favourite energizer a go!
